From the recording Rollin' in my Sweet Baby's Arms

Lyrics

The song “Rollin in my Sweet Baby’s Arms” is a traditional standard performed by many of the top bluegrass musicians across the globe.
Paul writes a few notes about the performance and recording technique used on this song. “On this song I play three individual instruments, the guitar, the banjo and the mandolin. I started the recording process by positioning myself around a single microphone. I stood left of the microphone to record the banjo, center on the microphone to record the guitar and right of the microphone to record the mandolin. I recorded one track of backing chords with each of the three instruments. I then recorded the melody to the song over the backing chords. You hear the original melody played on the guitar at both the beginning and end of the track. Lastly, I recorded a one take improvisation over the backing chords with each of the three instruments. There are no overdubs or set written parts for the solos. Each of the three solos or turns as they are known in the bluegrass style of playing was recorded in the true spirit of bluegrass music and became the final cut of the song. Sweet Baby’s Arms, as well as many bluegrass standards are a ton of fun to play. I truly enjoyed playing each instrument on this tune and hearing the song come together piece by piece.”
